Printing gray scale photo with CMYK?

So I'm currently trying to reproduce some prints from my photo class. My problem is that when when i print them they are coming out with a purplish tint as opposed to a nice neutral gray. I understand that is partly because I'm using CMYK inks, but is there anyway I can reduce the purple color in them. I know that any reproductions I do will never be as good, as the original prints, but the purple is kind of pissing me off.

What you want to do to get the best quality grayscale prints is to restrict your printer to using just its black ink cartridge, and none of the other three colors (cyan, magenta, and yellow.)
