Keeping Your Chef Knife in Top Condition
Chef knife is a sturdy, reliable, and efficient tool in any kitchen. It is one of the most essential and important tools in your kitchen whether you are a gourmet cook or just love to cook and adore your kitchen. However, do you have any idea on how to maintain and keep them? Several factors you need to know in order to keep your knives in top condition. Moreover, because good quality chef blades are an indispensable tool in the kitchen needs to be maintaining to keep their flexibility and high sharpness. Below are a few tips that will aid you in keeping your kitchen tools in top condition:
Always Keep Them Clean: Make sure that you wash it immediately after using your chef knife. Let it dry and do not put it in the sink where it can soak and drench in water for long periods. Even if the blade is made of stainless steel, it is still made of steel compounds that is attracted to corrosion or rust, if left for a long time in water. Therefore, you still need to wash it and dry it.
Foods rich in acids like lemon, mustard, wine, and ketchup should be rinsed off or washed off the knife right after using. If your knife blade show some staining signs, the use of a nonabrasive metal polish will do just fine.
Never ever, cut through bones with your chef knife because it can damage the edge of the blade. Use a meat clever, which is specially made for this purpose. By using your knife other than cutting food may bend or even break your blade. Always use a cutting surface that is easy on your knife's blade, it will keep your knife stay sharp longer.
Storage: never use the cutlery drawer in storing your chef knife. If you do this, the blade of your knife will rub with other metal knives inside the cutlery drawer. When this happens, it will make it dull. Put your knife in a wood block box or on a magnet bar, and when you are going to use the wood block, make sure the knife is dry before you put it inside, so that no moisture enters the wood. Utilize a steel rod sharpener from time-to-time in order for your blades to stay sharp. Use a whetstone sparingly. Every 3months if it is a European blade and every 6months if it is a Japanese blade. Never use your knife for utility purposes. It should be use exclusively for food and likewise, never wash or put it in your dishwasher. Although, a standard chef knife is always dishwasher safe, it is advisable to just hand clean it so that it will not stay wet for a long period and also, dishwashing detergents is not good and convenient as a cleaning agent for a chef knife.

- Always keep your chef knife sharp
- When using your knife, do not cut with the edge toward you or your fingers. This will guard you in case you slip; the blade keeps going toward you if that happens.
- Never leave your sharp knives inside the drawer, if someone would reach inside, it may cut their fingers.
- If for instance you drop your chef knife, let it fall and stand back. Never try to catch it. Wash your knives one at a time to avoid cutting yourself.
