Some say that these are just a bigger version of a saucepan. Well, it could be but they do differ when it comes to how important they are to someone using them. Aluminum vs 'Tin' Cans?

Why is it that soda pop is distributed commonly in aluminum cans and food such as soup is distributed in tin plated steel? I'm looking for an answer directed more towards the basis of its mechanical material qualities such as yield strength, shear strength.

The reason has NOTHING to do with strength of materials.

Prior to 1970, pop and beer were primarily distributed in tin cans. On Earth Day, 1970, there was a lot of information distributed by the makers of aluminum cans encouraging recycling of aluminum.

It takes less energy to recycle 10 aluminum cans than it takes to make 1 new one, I believe the advertising said. That made the used aluminum can rather valuable, and worth recycling.

It takes less energy to make 10 new steel cans than to recycle 1 one used aluminum can, but it's hard to recycle rusty plated steel into steel and zinc again, so used steel cans are almost worthless.

The eco-freaks promoted heavily the idea that you should buy beverages in aluminum cans, even though it costs more, because they can be recycled, even though it's worse for the environment than using new steel cans. The beer and pop manufacturers responded to the consumer demand for aluminum packaging and stopped using steel cans.

There are some aluminum cans used for other products, such as aerosol air freshener. In this case, it's not strength that matters, but aesthetic appeal. The soldered steel can has a ugly seam about 5/8" wide, so it commonly has a paper label. A welded steel can has a narrow seam, so applying decorations directly to the steel is acceptable, but you still have that seam, and the lower chime. An aluminum can, such as developed by Apache, has no lower chime, making the can still more attractive.

The biggest manufacturer of soup is Campbell's. They have prided themselves for generations on their can technology. They kept the price of a can of tomato soup 10c for a long time, despite the fact that both labor and ingredients kept getting more expensive, by learning to make the cans for less and less money - considerably cheaper than the big can companies could make cans.

Even Campbells is moving to new packaging. The old soup cans work perfectly fine, as long as you make the assumption that the soup can will be opened in a kitchen, where there is an opener, a sauce pan, a source of water to dilute the soup, something like a spoon to stir the soup, and a range to heat the soup on. If you assume that the soup will be eaten at work, with no preparation except heating in a microwave oven, and possibly drunk directly from the package, then you need different packaging.
